Because mutation multiplies a pet's base speed, the pet you actually ride is a combination of its rarity and whatever multiplier you have rolled onto it. Every pet in Ride A Pet comes from an egg, and each egg holds its own pool of possible pets across several rarity bands. When you hatch, the game rolls against that pool and drops the result straight into your inventory with its own speed value. You then mount one pet at a time; the mounted pet sets your movement speed, and nothing else does. Rarity controls both how low the odds are and how high the speed ceiling goes, which is why an egg further from spawn is worth the journey even before you know what is inside. Mutations layer on top of the base value rather than replacing it, so the same pet can be re-rolled into something much faster. Storage matters too, since a full backpack forces you to stop and manage inventory mid-route.
